There's no shortage of good podcast apps on the iPhone - if anything, the problem is choosing. Five are worth a close look: Overcast and Castro from independent developers, Pocket Casts out of the Automattic stable, the pre-installed Apple Podcasts, and - when podcasts don't stand alone but sit next to music and audiobooks - CLAUDIO. All five get you from subscribing to listening; they just disagree about what matters along the way.
Disclosure up front: I develop CLAUDIO. The claims about the other four come from their official descriptions and from press coverage (linked below).
Short answer
- You want a lean, fast podcast app and live in the Apple world: Overcast. Lean, fast, with plenty of listening features - and briskly developed again since its 2024 rebuild.
- You listen on iPhone, Android, the web and desktop: Pocket Casts. The cross-platform all-rounder with cloud sync across everything.
- You want to install nothing at all: Apple Podcasts. Already there, does what most people need.
- You like curated, tidy listening: Castro and its inbox model - with an eventful history behind it.
- Podcasts are only one part, and account plus tracking are off the table: CLAUDIO. A privacy-focused player that keeps podcasts, music and audiobooks in one app.
Overcast: the lean classic
Overcast by Marco Arment has been a fixture for over ten years. In 2024 Arment rewrote the app from the ground up - faster, more reliable, on a modern foundation, with touches like an undo button for an accidental seek. The listening features are mature: Smart Speed trims the pauses out of speech, Voice Boost makes quiet voices easier to hear.
The app is free but funds that tier with ads; Overcast Premium (around $10 a year) removes them and lets you upload your own files. Sync runs through an Overcast account.
Pocket Casts: the cross-platform all-rounder
Pocket Casts has been part of Automattic (the company behind WordPress.com) since 2021, and it's the all-rounder for anyone who doesn't listen on just one device: iPhone, Android, a web player and desktop all share the same state. A free account is enough for sync, queues and subscriptions; Pocket Casts Plus (around $4 a month or $40 a year) adds cloud storage, themes and extras.
The model is deliberately account- and cloud-centric - handy for cross-device listening, a trade-off if you'd rather keep data on the device.
Apple Podcasts: already there
Apple Podcasts comes pre-installed on every iPhone and covers what most people need: subscribe, download, listen with speed control and a sleep timer. Progress and subscriptions sync through your Apple ID across the ecosystem. If you're already at home in Apple's world, this is the shortest path - in exchange, your listening runs through an account and the usual ecosystem mechanics.
Castro: the inbox model
Castro approaches podcasts differently: new episodes land in an inbox, and you deliberately sort them into a queue instead of auto-downloading everything. If you subscribe to more shows than you could ever finish, that little bit of friction is exactly the point.
To be fair, the history is part of the picture: in late 2023 Castro was on the brink, before being acquired by indie developer Bluck Apps in early 2024, and it has been actively maintained since. The app is alive and well, but the episode is a reminder of how fragile small services can be.
CLAUDIO: podcasts, without an account or tracking
CLAUDIO takes a different angle: podcasts aren't a universe of their own here - they sit next to music and audiobooks in one library. Subscribing via RSS URL or the Apple Podcasts search, streaming and searching are free - all of it without an account. Downloading episodes is part of the one-time Pro purchase; new episodes then download on their own overnight while the phone is on the charger. Pro also adds OPML import/export, chapter navigation, per-show intro and outro skipping, a sleep timer and read-along - for downloaded episodes in supported languages, the spoken text scrolls along in sync, transcribed on the device. The same goes for widgets for the Home Screen and Lock Screen plus Control Center controls, for example for the sleep timer and a 30-second jump (iPhone and iPad). New episodes land at the top, in the middle or at the bottom of the list, depending on the show's priority.
The core is privacy: no account, no ads, no analytics - the App Store label reads "Data Not Collected". That has an honest cost: no account also means no progress sync between devices. If switching seamlessly between iPhone and iPad matters to you, an account-based app serves you better. And CLAUDIO isn't a podcast specialist with deep discovery; its case is keeping everything you listen to in one privacy-focused app.

FAQ
Which podcast app collects the least data? CLAUDIO requires no account and is listed on the App Store as "Data Not Collected". The others need an account for cross-device sync; Overcast funds its free tier with ads.
Can I take my subscriptions with me when I switch apps? Yes, via OPML - a small file that holds all your subscriptions. Most apps can export and import it; in CLAUDIO, OPML is part of Pro.
Is there a podcast-only version of CLAUDIO? No - CLAUDIO is deliberately a multi-format player; subscribing, searching and streaming are free, downloading episodes is part of Pro. If you listen to podcasts exclusively and need cross-device sync, a specialist is often the better fit.
