ShelfPlayer, Plappa, or Finamp?

Search for the "best Audiobookshelf client" or the "best Jellyfin app for iPhone" and you get long lists, but the question is simpler than it looks. What matters first is which server you actually run. Once that is settled, each server has two or three serious candidates, and this post puts exactly those side by side: ShelfPlayer and Plappa for Audiobookshelf, Finamp and Fintunes for Jellyfin, plus a look at Navidrome and at the "more than one server" case.

Full transparency up front: I develop CLAUDIO, which appears below as the multi-source option. Everything about the other apps comes from their official sites, repositories and App Store listings, all linked at the end.

Short answer

  • More than one server, say Audiobookshelf for audiobooks and Jellyfin or a NAS for music: CLAUDIO. One library for every source, with CarPlay, chapters and read-along, no account and no tracking. Server connections and CarPlay belong to Ultra (subscription) or the one-time Pro+, and CarPlay shows only local and downloaded titles.
  • Audiobookshelf: Plappa, free to start, with CarPlay and offline via in-app purchase. ShelfPlayer is capable, but changed hands in July 2026: the repository is archived, the app is now a one-time purchase and requires iOS 26.
  • Jellyfin music: Finamp, the community standard, free and open source; the stable App Store version is old, though, and CarPlay is only in the TestFlight beta. If you prefer minimal: Fintunes, with CarPlay not on its feature list.
  • Navidrome/Subsonic: Amperfy, free and open source, with CarPlay and offline included.

ShelfPlayer vs. Plappa: the Audiobookshelf question

Both are native iOS clients for Audiobookshelf, both do CarPlay and offline downloads, both need a running server. The differences are elsewhere.

Plappa is free on the App Store; an optional in-app purchase (one-time or subscription) unlocks downloads and customization. It reads chapters and metadata, syncs listening progress via iCloud or your server, and speaks Jellyfin and Emby in addition to Audiobookshelf. That helps if your audiobooks live on two systems. App Store reviews consistently single out the CarPlay integration.

ShelfPlayer was the feature-rich open-source alternative for a long time: multiple Audiobookshelf servers at once, widgets, Siri, CarPlay. In July 2026 the original developer handed the project over to a company, the GitHub repository has been archived since July 23, 2026, and the App Store listing now shows a one-time purchase ($5.99 in the US store) under a new seller, requiring iOS 26. The app keeps working, but the open-source chapter is closed, and where development goes from here is an open question.

That makes today's recommendation simpler than it was in spring: Plappa is the safe default. ShelfPlayer remains interesting if you connect multiple Audiobookshelf servers and don't mind the one-time purchase. Just buy it knowing that the project has only just changed hands.

The official Audiobookshelf app is still not on the App Store for iOS, only via TestFlight or sideloading. More candidates (SoundLeaf, AudioBooth) and the details are in the Audiobookshelf guide.

Finamp vs. Fintunes: the Jellyfin question

Both play music from your Jellyfin server, both are free and open source. Their characters could hardly differ more.

Finamp is the player the Jellyfin community recommends by default (MPL-2.0, source on GitHub). Its strengths: offline downloads with optional transcoding to save storage, gapless playback, volume normalization via ReplayGain. The catch: the stable App Store version is old; the project is in the middle of a full redesign that runs as a TestFlight beta. The beta is considered fine for daily use and has shipped CarPlay since June 2026; the App Store version doesn't have it yet. If you want to use Finamp seriously, you will realistically end up on the beta.

Fintunes is the opposite model: a deliberately minimal streaming player (MIT license) with search, downloads for offline listening and AirPlay/Chromecast. There's no beta construction site and no feature mountain, but also no CarPlay on the feature list. If you just want to stream your Jellyfin library and count simplicity as a feature, Fintunes is the calmer choice.

In short: Finamp for features, Fintunes for peace of mind. If you want CarPlay ready-made from the App Store, the Jellyfin music guide covers further options (Finer Player, Jellify, Manet).

What about Navidrome?

For Navidrome and other Subsonic-compatible servers the situation is comfortable: Amperfy delivers offline mode, CarPlay, an equalizer and ReplayGain for free and open source (GPLv3); Substreamer is the no-frills free option, play:Sub the veteran with thorough caching (one-time purchase). The nice thing about the Subsonic API: server and app are independent choices, and the full comparison lives in the Navidrome guide.

When it's more than one server: CLAUDIO

Nearly all the apps above are built for exactly one server ecosystem; Plappa does speak Jellyfin and Emby too, but sticks to audiobooks there. If you run more than one (say Audiobookshelf for audiobooks and Jellyfin or a NAS for music), that means one app per source.

CLAUDIO is a privacy-focused player built for exactly this case: music, audiobooks and podcasts from Audiobookshelf, Jellyfin, Navidrome/Subsonic, NAS/SMB, WebDAV, SFTP, iCloud Drive and local files in one library, with CarPlay, chapters, read-along (transcribed on device), a sleep timer, Knock to Resume, widgets and offline downloads. Favorites sync with Audiobookshelf, Jellyfin and Navidrome in both directions, and played tracks are reported to Jellyfin and Navidrome. There's no account and no analytics; the App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected". Fair catch: local files, iCloud and podcast streaming are free, while remote servers and CarPlay belong to the paid Ultra tier (or the one-time Pro+), and in CarPlay CLAUDIO only plays local and downloaded titles, without streaming. For a single server, a dedicated client is the more direct choice. Once two or more sources are involved, CLAUDIO is the natural pick: one library, one player, no switching between apps.

Which one for whom?

  • Several servers, one app, no tracking: CLAUDIO.
  • Audiobookshelf only: Plappa.
  • Multiple Audiobookshelf servers, one-time purchase is fine: ShelfPlayer, as long as you know about the ownership change.
  • Jellyfin only, maximum features: Finamp, realistically the TestFlight beta.
  • Jellyfin only, deliberately minimal: Fintunes.
  • Navidrome/Subsonic: Amperfy.

FAQ

ShelfPlayer or Plappa? For most people today, Plappa: free to start, CarPlay, actively developed. ShelfPlayer was sold in July 2026, its repository is archived and the app is now a one-time purchase. It works, but its future is less clear.

Finamp or Fintunes? Finamp if offline transcoding, gapless and ReplayGain matter to you and the TestFlight beta doesn't put you off. Fintunes if you want a simple, finished player from the App Store and can live without CarPlay.

What is the best Jellyfin client for iOS? There is no single answer: Finamp is the community standard, and for CarPlay straight from the App Store there are Finer Player, Jellify and Manet. The Jellyfin guide sorts this out in detail.

Is Finamp TestFlight-only? No, the App Store carries a stable but older version. The redesign with CarPlay runs as a TestFlight beta until it lands as a stable release.

Which app covers several servers at once? CLAUDIO connects Audiobookshelf, Jellyfin, Navidrome and further sources including NAS shares and local files in one library, for music, audiobooks and podcasts. Plappa connects Audiobookshelf, Jellyfin and Emby (for audiobooks).

Disclosure: I develop CLAUDIO, which is why it says so at the top and not in the fine print. If a single dedicated client covers your case, take it; for several sources in one app, give CLAUDIO a try; starting out is free.
