Most people who listen to podcasts on an iPhone use Apple Podcasts or Overcast. Next to them sits a row of smaller apps that do one thing differently or better: a one-time purchase instead of a subscription, AI notes, payments straight to the creators, or no data collection at all. Here are seven of them.
Up front: I develop CLAUDIO, one of the seven. The details on the other apps come from their German App Store pages, checked on 28 October 2026, and from official help pages (sources below), so prices are in euros. Privacy labels are the developers' own statements; Apple does not verify them. Overcast, Pocket Casts and Apple Podcasts have their own comparison.
Short answer
- Pay once and let nothing be collected: iCatcher! for €5.99, "Data Not Collected" on the App Store, sync through iCloud.
- Sort new episodes on purpose: Castro with its inbox and queue, though it carries ads and tracking data.
- Learn from podcasts and export notes: Snipd with AI summaries and export to Notion, Readwise and Obsidian.
- Send money straight to the creators: Fountain with value for value.
- Podcasts, music and audiobooks in one app without an account: CLAUDIO; podcasts are free, downloads and the listening features cost a one-time €4.99.
iCatcher!: one purchase, no data collection
iCatcher! is still maintained: version 15.2.1 shipped in late October 2026, with an iPad sidebar and on-device transcripts on iOS 26. It costs €5.99 once, plus optional tips. Subscriptions, playback positions and playlists sync through iCloud, and the description mentions no account of its own. Password-protected feeds, chapters with artwork, variable speed and a sleep timer are included.
The App Store lists it as "Data Not Collected", same as CLAUDIO. The interface is functional and less polished than Overcast.
Downcast: the old one-time purchase
Downcast costs €2.99 once and brings CarPlay, chapters, variable speed, a sleep timer and iCloud sync. There is a separate app for the Mac. Its privacy label lists only data not linked to you: usage, diagnostics and a user ID.
The problem is upkeep. The last update dates from 26 January 2025, 21 months ago. The app works, but whether it keeps working with future iOS versions is an open question.
Castro and its inbox
Castro's idea: new episodes land in an inbox, and you decide which of them go into the queue. If you subscribe to many shows and don't hear everything, that keeps the list under control. CarPlay, an Apple Watch app and a sleep timer come with it. Castro Plus (€3.99 a month or €24.99 a year) adds trim silence, voice boost and mono mix.
Castro nearly shut down at the end of 2023 and has been maintained again since; the latest version shipped in September 2026. The seller on the German App Store is now Maple Media Apps. The app "contains ads", and the privacy label lists contact info, identifiers and usage data used to track you. For an inbox app, that is a lot.
Snipd: podcasts with AI notes
Snipd is built for people who want to learn from podcasts. It generates transcripts, chapters, summaries and guest profiles. One tap saves a "snip", a passage with its text, and syncs it to Notion, Readwise or Obsidian. New is an "AI DJ" that puts together a 30-minute mix of episode moments.
The AI features run on a subscription with a quota of "AI minutes"; the store page gives no prices. According to its privacy label, Snipd links purchases, contact info, content, identifiers and usage data to you, and uses some of it for tracking.
Fountain: money straight to the creators
Fountain is built on "value for value": listeners send shows money, for example as a one-off "boost" to an episode. You top up by card or through services such as Cash App, Coinbase and Strike. Clips, comments, chapters, transcripts, CarPlay and downloads come on top. Fountain runs on iOS, Android and Apple silicon Macs; Premium costs €2.99.
According to its privacy label, Fountain collects contact info, audio data and usage data but does not link them to you. If payments and Bitcoin services mean nothing to you, you won't use the core of the app.
Podverse: open source, but quiet
Podverse is open source (AGPLv3) and runs on iOS, Android and the web. It handles CarPlay, automatic downloads, and chapters and transcripts following the Podcasting 2.0 standard. Premium at €19.99 a year adds sync, clips and playlists.
The last iOS update, though, dates from April 2024. If you want open source, you'll find clean code here, but not an active app.
CLAUDIO: podcasts next to music and audiobooks
CLAUDIO is not a pure podcast client. Podcasts sit in the same library as music and audiobooks, from local files, iCloud Drive or your own server. Subscribing by RSS URL, through Apple Podcasts search or from the Apple Podcasts charts by genre, streaming and searching are free, all without an account. New episodes land in a list of their own, where you dismiss them, put them on the priority list or play them right away. The principle resembles Castro's inbox.
The one-time CLAUDIO Pro purchase (€4.99) unlocks downloads, and new episodes then download on their own while the iPhone is on the charger. It also brings trim silence, OPML import and export, chapters, per-show intro and outro skipping, a sleep timer and read-along: for downloaded episodes in supported languages, the text scrolls along, transcribed on the device. With Pro, subscriptions and playback positions also sync between your devices through iCloud. If you collect podcasts on your own Audiobookshelf server, CLAUDIO Ultra (subscription) or the one-time Pro+ shows them in the library too.
The App Store label reads "Data Not Collected"; there are no ads and no analytics. The limits: CLAUDIO exists only for Apple devices, there are no AI features like Snipd's, and CarPlay shows only downloaded episodes and is part of Ultra.

Which one for whom?
- You want to pay once and hand over no data: iCatcher!, or CLAUDIO if music and audiobooks should live in the same app.
- You listen a lot and want to pick every episode yourself: Castro, if ads and tracking don't bother you; otherwise CLAUDIO with its list of new episodes.
- You listen to non-fiction podcasts and take notes: Snipd.
- You want to support shows directly: Fountain.
- You need Android and iPhone at the same time: Fountain or Podverse, or Pocket Casts from the main comparison.
