Self-Hosted Audio on iOS
16 posts on this topic.
Self-hosted audio means your music, audiobooks and podcasts live on a server you run instead of a streaming service. Nothing vanishes from the catalog, no account is required, and your listening history stays on your own network. Common setups include Jellyfin for mixed media libraries, Navidrome and other Subsonic-compatible servers for music, and Audiobookshelf for audiobooks and podcasts. A plain SMB share on a NAS often does the job as well.
The server is rarely the hard part; the client is, especially on iOS. Not every server ships an official app, and where one exists it seldom covers everything, so third-party players fill the gap. Small details decide whether the setup holds up in daily use: offline downloads, CarPlay support and audiobook chapters that actually show up.
This page collects every post on the topic: comparisons of iOS apps for Jellyfin, Navidrome and Audiobookshelf, notes on playing audio from a NAS or network share, and lessons from building CLAUDIO, a privacy-focused player.
